It also has no set name, but I'm throwing some around.

Anyway, I'm going to go through each chapter and talk about the changes I have made/are going to make. First up: Characters!

As far as the actual character creation goes, there is one change - the crew can create a crew goal that gives everyone a level if it is accomplished.

The more significant changes are in the broods, but most are minor. The exception is the addition of two new broods: the Ghoul and the Mutant! These are cutting room floor broods that I had considered for the original edition, but now they have been worked out and are ready for daylight (or moonlight, as it were)

Created: Mostly the same, except I have clarified their power regain slightly

Demon: No major changes

Faerie: No major changes

Ghost: Ghosts can be damaged by salt even if they are incorporeal

Ghoul: The first new brood! Ghouls are your classic flesh-eating undead, the original source material for modern zombie myths. The Ghoul is fairly animalistic, gaining bonuses for attacking in swarms and navigating underground. They hunger for flesh and are weak to strong acids and solvents.

Gillman: Made some clarifications that they gain power through destroying things OUTSIDE of combat. Their starting edge has also changed to the new Amphibious, and they gain a new ability called Frenzy

Mortal: No major changes

Mutant: The second new brood! Mutants are meant to fill the role of Jekyll and Hyde, the Invisible Man, and so on. They're good at maintaining a low profile but fairly unstable and easy to rattle. They also start out with a random edge, which I think is cool.

Revenant: They get a slightly updated description saying they are "preserved undead", just to make it a little more clear that a Revenant can be a mummy just as much as an Eric Draven-type

Vampire: No major changes

Warlock: The Familiar ability has been slightly clarified and expanded on, as is The Paths drawback

Werewolf: Their Lunacy drawback has been revised, and now they DO change at the sight of a full moon. That was a drawback I always felt I didn't do justice, so now it's there. It still does not mean time needs to be tracked through lunar cycles, but it can make for dramatic moments.
Tanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-66155345819545632962022-04-13T15:45:00.002-07:002022-04-17T17:12:23.168-07:00Nightcrawlers Designer Diary Pt. 1 - Characters and Broods

Hello all, and welcome to my first part of a post-mortem design diary for my splatterpunk game, Nightcrawlers! If you haven't picked it up, get it here or here or here in print.

I wanted to write this series to give an insight into my design process and why I did things a certain way. I've thankfully gotten many kind words for the game, but I just want to show everyone what goes into making a game. I hope you enjoy!

Why Black Hack?

Nightcrawlers uses the game Black Hack as its main engine, but it wasn't originally that way. It started as a World of Dungeons hack that never saw the light of day, then over to a Swords & Wizardry White Box game that didn't see much development beyond some notes.

I chose Black Hack eventually for a few reasons - it's simplicity, it's wide amount of support material to crib and take inspiration from, and the small-but-mighty nature of the game. I worked on Nightcrawlers for literally almost three years, but my dev cycle when I changed to Black Hack took maybe 6 months.

Why Nightcrawlers?

I love monsters, man. Ghouls, ghosts, horror movies of all stripes, whatever. My problem is I don't love most play-as-monsters games. The juggernaut, World of Darkness, is too brooding and too unfocused. I wanted violence, aggressive music, sex and drugs - I wanted mixed monster crews! I felt that WoD and similar games were becoming power politics with magic, which is ok for some but not for me.

I also wanted a game of punks and optimism. Monsters are an easy stand-in for oppressed groups, and I wanted the game to be about finding brotherhood, power, support, and solidarity among outcasts. Punks fight for a better world even with the odds stacked against them, and I wanted my monsters to do the same.

Nightcrawlers is a modern love letter to those WoD heartbreakers of the 90s, where shedding blood while listening to Alice in Chains was all you could ask for - games like The Everlasting, Nightbreed, and the proto-WoD Nightlife. Nightcrawlers actually started as a retroclone of Nightlife, and I owe Nightcralwer's creation to it still.

Character

Most of what is in the Character chapter is expected: stats, classes (in this case, Broods), backgrounds as skills, etc. However, there are two aspects of Characters that I think make Nightcrawlers stand out from other Black Hack-derived games.

The first, though it seems minor, is Nature. I struggled to figure out how to include features inherent to undead and spiritual beings for each Brood without overtaking their drawbacks and abilities. My answer was simply adding another character aspect: Nature. It's not a complicated rules rider, but it shows that sometimes adding a rule can simplify everything.

The second important aspect is the Goals. Experience in any RPG can go many different ways, but Black Hack mostly goes by the "progress when the GM says approach." This is totally valid, but I wanted players to be more engaged in what their characters did. Goals accomplish this by not only implying a character's backstory but also setting the course for what they want the game to focus on. The Goals mechanics mainly were taken from Dancing With Bullets Under A Neon Sun, which is a great game.

Broods

The Broods themselves probably had the most work done to them in design. I see classes and character options as the real bottlenecks for RPGs - they define what a character can and can't do more than stats, skills, etc. I'd like to do a shout out to Karl Stjernberg and his game Rad Hack, which informed a lot of my design decisions

The first big hurdle was just what Broods to cover. I obviously wanted the horror classics and and an even number to fit over the spreads. For a long time, I was going to have 12 Broods - the Revenant was going to be more like a zombie, and I would have added a Mummy and a Jekyll and Hyde-type Mutant. They got scrapped because I couldn't get the design how I wanted, but they may make a return sooner rather than later.

The next hurdle was defining what the brood could do and what it was weak against. This wasn't just a mechanical thing, but a narrative thing. For example, vampires have many variations in popular culture, so I had to decide what Nightcrawlers' vampires were like. I tried to keep to the common denominators of weaknesses and powers (vampires being weak to the sun, demons being weak to holy objects, etc), and I looked at other "play as monster" type games for ideas.

The scaling of the brood was also important. I wanted characters to be defined by their Edges rather than whatever inherent abilities they have for being a werewolf or ghost or whatever. Most of the scaling is in Edges and Spells, not in Special Features or Drawbacks. Health and damage were similar - I didn't want anyone significantly outclassed, so they mathematically stick close together.
Tanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-27090132778150952862022-01-13T14:52:00.002-08:002022-01-13T14:52:32.953-08:00Naga for OSE

Another quick OSE post for you - decided to stat out some Naga for your slaying pleasure. float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;">
I have been reading Old School Essentials lately, and I was curious how the encounter tables in the game kind of illustrate the world implied within OSE. This is inspired by the great set of articles from James Mishler called "The Original D&D Setting" (link). I'm going to go through OSE's encounter tables (using the Advanced Fantasy Referee's Tome) and see just what the tables imply.

Today, we are going to start off with the first entry: Barren, Hills and Mountains. Though Hills and Mountains are self-explanatory, Barrens seem to me to be more like dry mountains or badlands.

Initial Encounters
The initial encounter list is interesting: both dragons and humanoids are more encountered in these highland areas than any other terrain. There is also no chance to encounter the undead.

Animals
The animals entry has a lot of what you would expect: cave bears, mountain lions, hawks, wolves and so on. There are also some oddities: gorillas - which exist on mountains, but only in Africa - lots of snakes, rock babboons, and white apes. This gives me a vibe similar to a mountain range like the Rockies - dry at the bottom before becoming more alpine at the peaks. The apes are a bit of an outlier, and give a bit of a prehistoric vibe.

Humans
Bandits and brigands make up a quarter of human encounters here - bandits are normal thieves, while brigands are more vicious outlaws. There are also entries for neanderthals, going back to the prehistoric bent. Berserkers, which I always equate with vikings, are common too. Strangely, no basic adventurer parties are found in the mountains - only experienced ones.

Humanoids
A preponderance of giants exists in the mountains - in fact, you can encounter any giant save for fire giants. Ettins, dwarves, titans and gnomes are also common, with no real surprises. An interesting thing is the appearance of both scorpionfolk and yetis - I think this again backs up the more Rockies type range.

Monsters
The through-line with the monsters of the mountains is that most of them can fly - in fact, I think only the xorn and leucrocotta can't fly. There is a further fusion of desert and alpine creatures here with the sphinx, but it may also just be because this is also the barrens table.

Summary
Overall, the mountains of OSE are a little less savage than their OD&D counterparts. They are still dangerous and home to berserkers, cavemen and giants, but very few prehistoric animals. Using the prehistoric table, however, could inject more of that lost world feeling into them.

Next time, we'll go over the City and Settled Areas table!
Tanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-61132588377712076582021-10-29T13:14:00.000-07:002021-10-29T13:14:53.973-07:00Nightcrawlers Has Risen!

Holy crap, it's here! Below, I thought I'd whip up some of the classic sub-races of AD&D demihumans. These are templates to lay over the races provided in OSE Advanced. Unless otherwise stated, most of the abilities are in addition to a race's standard abilities.

Dwarves

The common dwarf is called a "hill dwarf" and has the same abilities as a normal dwarf.

Mountain

Mountain dwarves are slightly taller and more long-lived than their hill dwarf cousins. Otherwise, they are the same as a hill dwarf. They can only reach level 9 as a Fighter

Elves

The common elf is called a "high elf" and has the same abilities as a normal elf.

Gray

Sometimes called "faerie" or "sidhe", gray elves are more mysterious and aloof than high elves. Instead of normal elven ability modifiers, they gain a +1 to Intelligence. They can reach level 12 as a Magic-User.

Wood

Sometimes called "sylvan elves", wood elves are reclusive and more in-tune with the natural world than high elves. Instead of normal elven ability modifiers, they gain a +1 to Strength and a -1 to Intelligence. They are able to speak Alignment, Common, Elvish, Treant, and the language of woodland mammals instead of normal elven languages. They can reach level 8 as a Fighter, but can only reach level 9 as a Magic-User.

Wild

Wild elves are almost primitive, even avoiding contact with other elves. Instead of normal elven ability modifiers, they gain a +2 to Strength. Wild elves can interact with animals as if the Animal Friendship spell was in effect. They also have a 90% chance to set snares, pits, and traps in a wilderness setting. They are able to speak Alignment, Common, and Elvish instead of normal elven languages. They can reach level 7 as a Druid, level 9 as a Fighter, and they can not be Magic-Users.

Halflings

The common halfling is called a "hairfoot" and has the same abilities as a normal halfling.

Stout

Stout halflings are stockier and smaller than hairfoot halflings. Stout halflings have infravision and can detect construction tricks like gnomes. They can speak Dwarven in addition to their other languages. Stout halflings can reach level 7 as a Fighter.

Tallfellow

Tallfellow halflings are thinner and taller than hairfoot halflings. They can speak Elven in addition to their other languages. Tallfellow halflings can reach level 8 as a Fighter.

Gnome

The common gnome is called a "hill gnome" and has the same abilities as a normal gnome.

Forest

Forest gnomes, as their name suggests, live in the forests of the world instead of underground. Instead of being able to detect construction tricks, forest gnomes have a 4-in-6 chance to blend in with wooded underbrush, effectively making them invisible. Instead of burrowing mammals, forest gnomes can speak with small, woodland animals such as foxes, squirrels, rabbits, mice, etc. They can reach level 7 as a druid, but can not be Clerics.

Tanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-61335529244940254822021-01-22T11:19:00.004-08:002021-01-22T11:24:05.464-08:00The Hero's Journey 1e: Gnome Race

Back with more The Hero's Journey stuff, and this time it's for the gnome! The gnome is actually based on the gnome from the second edition of THJ, which I heard from James Spahn was inspired by a draft for a gnome race for the first edition. These gnomes lean more towards the weird tinkerers/illusionists side of the race than anything.

The class level restrictions are somewhat shots-in-the-dark. If I get around to making an Illusionist class (not off the table, but I'd have to do spells), they'd get 10 levels in that instead of Wizard. Up to three times per day, a Gnome can use the Phantasmal Force spell. This spell functions as if cast by a Level 1 Wizard.

Lifetime of Study: Because they have spent their life pursuing knowledge, all gnomes may use the Lore ability as if they were a 1st level bard. Gnomish bards receive a +1 to their Lore class ability. This ability cannot increase the Lore ability above 5

Instinctive Archaeologist: Gnomes have a sharp eye for ancient caverns, strange architecture, and crumbled ruins. They can detect secret or concealed doors, sloping stone passages, unusual stonecraft, and even large-scale mechanical constructs on a 1-2 on 1d6 simply by passing within 10 feet of them. This chance increases to 1-4 on 1d6 if they are actively searching for these things. In addition, gnomes can discern and operate large scale mechanical constructs and devices if they make a successful Lore check.

Hard To Hit: Gnomes receive a −2 [+2] bonus to their Armor Class due to their small size and quick reflexes. They also receive a +1 bonus “to-hit” when attacking foes which are man-sized or larger.

Dark Vision: Gnomes can see in starlight, moonlight, or perfect darkness at a distance of up to 90 feet.Tanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-40533051708755978072021-01-20T14:43:00.002-08:002021-01-22T09:52:34.247-08:00The Hero's Journey 1e: Assassin Class

James Spahn put out a great OSR game a few years ago called The Hero's Journey, and I love the thing. The newest edition of it is great too, but far more focused on Tolkien-esque adventures than traditional D&D stuff.

The old edition has a ton of classes, but one I thought could be included: the Assassin! This is based on the Swords and Wizardry Complete version of the class, as well as taking some cues from the White Box Heroes fan supplement for Swords and Wizardry White Box. A quick post today - I'm going to be running Blacky the Blackball's excellent FASERIP with a group soon, and I wanted to work up some Drawback rules to provide an option for the players.

FASERIP is based on the Marvel Superheroes RPG from the 80s, and it is interesting because aside from a few exceptions - like Daredevil - very few Marvel heroes have explicit 'weaknesses'. Seems to be much more of a DC thing.

The rules are somewhat cribbed from 4C Expanded, an expansion to the original MSH retroclone. Hope you get some use out of these, as I think they are pretty neat!

Drawbacks

A Drawback is very similar to a Limit, save that the Drawback affects the whole character rather than a specific power. The line between a Drawback and a Limit can be hard to draw sometimes - for example, while Daredevil's blindness would be considered a Drawback, something like Thor's Mjolnir would be a limit. Generally if the vulnerability affects the whole character and not a specific power, it's a Drawback.

Obtaining a Drawback is optional at character creation, and it's recommended that no character start with more than one (there's nothing stopping you from taking multiple ones, but the character just becomes a headache to play).
So I just had an interesting idea about the Border Princes, and I think this is how I'm going to pursue them.

I'm going to basically do an older version that I had considered in the past, previously titled the Marcher Baronies but now called the Borderlands. The Borderlands will, in fact, be very similar to the Border Princes but with a few caveats. For example, there are established kingdoms in the Borderlands - not many, but they are there. Further, the Borderlands will basically combined the Border Princes and the Badlands into one thing - parts of the Borderlands will also be inhabited by goblinoids come over from the Land of Darkness (a new area I'm going to detail), but I'm not going to delineate it into south v. north.

Where does that leave Osmanli? In relatively the same place, but I'm going to move it west to where Warhammer has Araby. This will also fill out my desire to kind of do the whole Mediterranean region. My not-Egypt isn't going to get a region, as I do not really want a Tomb Kings analogue - they will instead be one of the many kingdoms that has risen and fallen in the Borderlands. Basically, the Borderlands will be more SE Europe than purely the BalkansTanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-63237391535568490652020-07-07T09:50:00.001-07:002020-07-07T09:50:07.124-07:00Old World of Iron: Norsca and Drakenlanda

What It Is

Norsca is fairly clearly supposed to be Viking Age Scandinavia. Much like the rest of the Old World, it's kind of in the wrong time period - the Viking Age was almost half a millennium before the Early Modern Period. Norsca is very much displayed as being ruled by barbarism and barely functional at all, basically home to Chaos Warriors and not much else. The game doesn't even really mention too many heroic Norscans - except, as normal, in WFRP 1e. In early Warhammer, Norscans were definitely heroes - though still painted as barbarians, the WFRP 1e World Guide explicitly states they helped the Old World during the last chaos incursion and not the other way around. Much more Conan the Barbarian instead of wildmen of the north.

The Real World

Early Modern Scandinavia is weird because they aren't really much of a major player, at least on the surface. The end of the High Middle Ages saw Sweden, Denmark and Norway forming the Kalmar Union which lasted a little more than 150 years. After that, they split into Denmark-Norway (which was pretty stable) and Sweden. Early Modern Sweden was insane - Gustavus Adolphus basically modernized the whole country, won countless wars for the Protestants, and was by some accounts a murderous madman. Before Adolphus, Scandinavia was widely considered a backwater.

My Version

Drakenlanda (aka my not-Scandinavia) is hard to divorce from the whole viking thing because honestly vikings are interesting from an RPG perspective. However, Drakenlanda is going to be much like the Kalmar Union than something like Sweden - jarls and princes led by an elected king, similar to how Iceland had. They will basically be coming out of the viking age, partially Christianized but not unified and still mysteriously pagan. Basically imagine the Vesten from 7th SeaTanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-38619741344248352812020-07-07T08:30:00.004-07:002020-07-07T09:27:04.777-07:00Old World of Iron: Reconsidering Khazaria

This is just a small update post, but I was thinking about my last post regarding the Border Princes and Khazaria, and I had a very small revelation.

Basically, I'm not sure I like Khazaria too much. I don't know too much about Scythia or the Huns, plus they are also in the wrong time period as well. Hungary, which I cited, was basically at the time a fully Westernized empire with little left of the steppe nomad influence. Steppe nomads did exist however, and most of them lived in parts of Russia as cossacks. Plus like I said, the Balkans were possessed by the Ottomans at this time too so there wasn't really a Border Prince analogue

So I'm going to roll Khazaria into my not-Russia, known as Ruthen. Kind of similar to Kislev in all honesty, plus the Border Princes are so non-cultural it's not a huge loss. To keep with the number of nations though, I plan on doing something fun basically involving a not-Caribbean or not-Sartosa of tropical pirate isles off the coast of Europe.Tanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-5362299997790026712020-07-06T17:59:00.001-07:002020-07-06T17:59:25.626-07:00Old World of Iron: Border Princes and Khazaria

What It Is

The Border Princes is Warhammer's analogue to the Balkans - but with really near zero relation to Earth's Balkans. Warhammer doesn't have a Byzantine Empire expy, so the Border Princes is basically just a borderland to separate 'civilization' from the Badlands. The Balkan analogy is really found in the Prince's beginning as crusader states, a kind-of Constantinople in Barak Varr, and just the concept of balkanization. Really, it's just an excuse to give a region for players to establish a little kingdom should they get to such a high level.

The Real World

During the Early Modern period, the Balkans were going through a really rough time. The Balkans were the seat of the Byzantine Empire for literal centuries, but with the sacking of Constantinople most of it fell under the suzerainty of the Ottomans. You just need to do a glance at history to see what a terrible time this was, especially with the oppression of Greeks and Jews. What wasn't controlled by the Turks was basically controlled by Venice. The only thing kind of going for the Balkans was Hungary, who was actually pretty powerful at the time (until they got eaten up by the HRE).

My Version

I'm going to make my Border Princes something less violent and oppressive, and it fills a niche that Warhammer lacks to an extent. Khazaria (working name) is going back to the earlier Balkan history of nomadic steppe cultures such as the Huns, Bulgars, Yakuts, Magyars, Cimmerans, and Scythians - a nation of horse lords lead by khans/khagans. I was mostly inspired by this by games like Mount & Blade, the Ninth Age's Makhar Steppe, and settings like Artesia. A similar region exists in Warhammer in the Eastern Steppe, but I'm going to strip out all the Hobgoblin Khanate stupidity and make it purely human.

Khazaria is made of steppe people, but it's NOT Mongolia. Mongolia is not really the focus of the setting, but you can assume it's 'over beyond the mountains'.

What It Is

Bretonnia is fairly obviously Early Modern France - kind of. Bretonnia is if France and Arthurian Legend had a child, which is honestly not too far off from reality. Early Bretonnia, as in WFRP 1e Bretonnia, was far more explicitly JUST France without much of the knightly attitude or even the Lady of the Grail. In fact, the Lady of the Grail isn't even mentioned in the early days of Warhammer - it only came about when they became a fully fleshed-out army.

The Real World

Funnily enough, the France/England crossover has basis in real history - just look up the Angevian Empire and the Norman invasion of England. Again, like Araby in the last post, that kind of thing was roughly 300 years before the height of the Early Modern period. In real life, France was doing fairly well for itself despite them being one of the only nations in Europe still practicing extensive feudalism. Good ol' Louis XIV would fix this and help usher in the Ancien Regime, which was the height of France's imperial power until that little 'revolution' happened.

My Version

Couronne, as my not-France is called, would hew a little closer to what original WFRP had - explicitly Early Modern France without the mysticism/fairy-tale angle. They are keeping their rivalry with Aquilla (my not-HRE) and their decadent nobles and knights and feudal fiefdoms, but no 'fantasy Space Marines' here. Religiously, I'd keep France not-Catholic instead of forcing in a weird local hero cult type thing.Tanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-37753741448308963522020-07-05T17:42:00.001-07:002020-07-05T18:40:56.207-07:00Old World of Iron: The Badlands and Osmanli

My goal is to go back to the very EARLY days of the setting when it was called the 300 Years War and keep the setting focused on Early Modern Europe.

However, I have a different approach. I'm going to take the dozen regions I consider in the Old World in the Warhammer setting, discuss their origins, and then discuss what their REAL WORLD counterpart was like during the 15th-17th century - and make the region closer to that in the Age of Iron setting.

The first place I wanted to focus on was The Badlands.

What It Is

The Badlands are ostensibly the 'goblinoid' area of the Old World. Though there are more goblinoids running around in the Dark Lands, that region has really been overshadowed by the Chaos Dwarves. Geographically, the Badlands is roughly analogous to the Middle East, though not really in a cultural sense. The Marshes of Madness and Morgheim don't have a real direct analogue as far as I know aside from something resembling a Romani homeland, but they could be considered similar to Judea or the Kingdom of Israel at a stretch. Again, that's mostly historical rather than cultural.

The Real World

By the Early Modern Period, the Ottoman Empire had basically conquered all of the Near East aside from Persia - even claiming ownership over Arabia. The Ottoman Empire does exist in the Old World, but 'Araby' is in the region the Almohad Caliphate was roughly 300 years prior (being northwest Africa). It's also reduced to a minor player, when in reality the Ottoman Empire was the most powerful empire in Europe.

My Version

My Badlands would thus be replaced with Osmanli - a fairly straightforward Ottoman Empire perhaps mixed with some Arabic and Persian elements to resemble caliphates of old. The goblinoids in the Badlands would basically disappear. I like the idea of goblinoids being a spread out, unconcentrated force of nature rather than a force of 'othered' barbarian invaders. When greenskins appear, it should be less like an invasion and more like a plague.Tanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-3652475015808934752020-07-03T11:44:00.000-07:002020-07-03T11:44:07.439-07:00Borderlands: Old School Diseases

The Borderlands is kind of system agnostic, but I am kind of leaning towards it being playable in most Old School-type games. Obviously Zweihander has a lot of qualities for this already, but I also wanted to flex some design muscles with other systems. I am going to be using the great Old School Essentials as a mechanical base, but these should work with most OSR (eugh) games with little issue.

Thanks to TheChaosGrenade for some good names for some of these!

DISEASES

The Borderlands is a disgusting, disease-filled place. The streets are full of half-rotten food and midden heaps, the Witchweed Swamp is full of disease and bile carrying vermin, and one wrong step in a sewer slough can end up with you losing a foot.

When exposed to a disease of any sort, the character should make a Save vs. Death or Poison (modified by the disease's virulence) or else contract the disease. The disease effects take place after the listed incubation period passes and they last for the listed duration.

EXAMPLE DISEASES

Toadstool Blight
A parasite inflicted by spores inhaled from some breeds of giant fungi. Highly dangerous if untreated
Duration: 2d10
Remedy: Drinking a pint of vinegar a day for 2d4 days

Effect: -1 to all ability scores/day. If a score reaches 0, you die and become fully consumed by fungus
Black Plague

Stinkfoot
Better known as gangrene. Doesn't always happen in the foot, but its common enough to get the name.

Virulence: 0
Incubation: 1d4
Duration: 2d8
Remedy: Applying maggots to the area for 1d4 hours
Incubation: 1d4
Duration: 2d6
Remedy: Draining through painful incision
Effect: -1d6 CHA while indisposed. Extreme difficulty urinating, can often lead to bladder infections

Festerveins
A type of blood infection, usually brought about through improper use of Scratch.

The Holy Church and Order of the Divine Faith of the Illluminated, or more commonly the Illuminated Church, is the majority religion in the Borderlands. The faith was founded by a group of monks who were said to be given divine visions and guidance by celestial beings called the Illuminated. What the Illuminated are, where they are from, or what they want with humanity is only guessed at, but those monks were able to derive an oppressive doctrine from their visits that would form the foundation of the Church today.

The Illuminated Church doctrine revolves around the holiness of suffering, obedience, purity and the fact that all humans are sinners who must spend their existence atoning for their curse of birth. Most large settlements possess at least one church, while rural villages either have small shrines or are visited by wandering Mendicants. Plenty of commoners - actually the majority of them - don't favor the Church's teachings, but criticism or disobedience is deemed heresy worthy of at least imprisonment. Thus, most people observe the rituals and holidays of the Church, attending sermons and kowtowing to priests out of fear.

The Church doesn't directly worship the Illuminated, as they are seen as nebulous and almighty beings who are too far beyond the comprehension of mortals to understand. Instead, a variety of hero saints receive most of the devotion. There are literally hundreds of saints who are patrons of things from mothers to carpenters to gravediggers. Most people or churches will focus their worship on one saint or a small collection of them, and some may even possess a holy relic such as a severed finger or a defleshed skull.

In addition to ruling over the Empire, the Emperor is also the head of the Church and is seen as a living saint (saints are usually only granted sainthood after their deaths). Emperor Magnus is not exactly the most pious Emperor, as he'd rather spend time drinking and philandering than at the altar. The Church leaders in the Orthodoxy don't particularly mind this however, as it allows them to do what they please with little backlash. Thus in recent years, the Church has become especially militant and fanatical.Tanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-53992180312033446712020-07-03T06:41:00.000-07:002020-07-03T08:06:35.483-07:00Borderlands: Illuminated Church Sects

Templars: The militant wing of the Illuminated Church, Templars are fanatical knights given divine authority to murder by the Orthodoxy. Trained in combat and liturgy, Templars follow a strict code of backwards 'ethics' and rote, and a member straying from them could suffer lashes, expulsion or even execution. Most Templars are loaned out to the Houses to serve as generals or guard captains, but the Church can at any time call them up for duty or to join a Crusade - an event that could spell disaster for the whole Borderlands.

Associated Sub-Sects: Brothers of the Bleeding Wolf, Brothers of the Crimson Flame, Brothers of the Eternal Word

Inquisition: Inquisitors and their large array of agents are dedicated solely to the imprisonment, torture or eradication of heretics, mutants, demons and fell sorcerers. They are little more than religious law enforcers, tracking down perceived 'criminals' and dragging them from their houses screaming in the night. Inquisitors use torture, threats, pyre burning and drowning to extract confessions from the accused - even if the confession is not true. Inquisitors don't particularly care, as everyone is a sinner within their eyes.

Associated Sub-Sects: Order of the Sin Eaters, Order of the Executioners, Order of the Pyre Builders

Ecstatics: The Ecstatics are a sect of mystics, scholars and theurgists who spend most of them their time in their libraries and workshops working to divine the nature of the Illuminated. Most of their work comes from alchemical concoctions, demon summoning, and painful and debased experiments on living subjects. The Ecstatics border on heretical most of the time, but their work on binding warlocks and reanimating fallen Templars to serve as undead juggernauts has let the Inquisition turn a blind eye to their methods.

Associated Sub-Sects: Monks of the Crypt, Monks of the Tome, Monks of the Iron Gear

Orthodoxy: The Orthodoxy are the leaders and preachers of the Illuminated Church, and are thus the most powerful sect by far. Orthodox priests can be found whispering in the ears of many lords and ladies, directing them in the desires of the Illuminated less they want to be branded heretics - ensuring that the Church remains the true power behind the throne in the Borderlands. The Orthodoxy is most prevalent in the cities, and their firebrand sermons regularly incite religious riots against pagans and non-believers.

Associated Sub-Sects: Cult of the First Emperor, Cult of St. Johann, Cult of the Three Sisters

Mendicants: The Mendicants are travelling pilgrims and doomsayers, trudging across the Borderlands to deliver liturgies and provide healing and benisons to the commoners. While on the surface the Mendicants seem to be the most beneficent sect, their main mission is to endear the smallfolk to the oppressive Church doctrine and make them docile. Mendicants also serve as satellite informers to the Inquistion, communicating through secret signs and drawn symbols the wandering priests leave on the houses of the heretical.

Associated Sub-Sects: Children of the Bleeding Feet, Children of the Blinded Eyes, Children of the Pox RiddenTanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-52339962781224991682020-07-02T13:41:00.002-07:002020-07-02T13:41:45.455-07:00Borderlands: Major Noble Houses

Note: None of these Houses are descriptive of the people their names are derived from

House Danzig: House Danzig is the richest of the houses, having aligned themselves with the many guilds of the Borderlands. This has allowed them to obtain great tracts of arable land and to fill the roads and rivers with their many trade caravans carrying exotic goods imported from beyond the Empire. House Danzig mostly stays outside of inter-House conflict - mainly because they know if they rallied the guilds they have a stranglehold over they could wipe out the remaining houses with a snap of their fingers.

Associated Minor Houses: House Cisneros, House Homme, House Fallon

House Kilmeister: House Kilmeister fields the largest military force among all the major Houses. Raised from birth to be ruthless soldiers, they constantly itch for combat even when the houses are at relative peace. House Kilmeister often press-gangs their serfs into serving in their forces, arming them with little more than a spear and a week of drilling. House Kilmeister also sponsors many smiths and alchemists, meaning their warmachine is replete with advanced technology freshly churned out from their workshops.

Associated Minor Houses: House Pike, House Hinds, House Faris

House Ford: House Ford is the most decadent of all the major Houses. They portray themselves as enlightened, witty and cordial, but they are extremely ruthless and cunning. House Ford employs assassins and spies to kill any who dare get in their way, and use their massive network of illegal drug and poison trade to either incapacitate or kill anyone they please. House Ford is also crueler to their populace than most of the other Houses, putting them in something more akin to slavery than serfdom.

Associated Minor Houses: House Dio, House Malmsteen, House Vialon

House Osbourne: House Osbourne is the oldest extant major House, and strangely the most loved. House Osbourne nobles are narcissistic and carry an undeserved air of superiority, but they are somehow very benevolent to their fiefdoms - feeding the poor, aiding the sick, and educating them. This is all for show, as this has allowed them to create a sense of blind loyalty among their followers that will let them get away with anything - a prime example being the popular imperial election of their scion, Emperor Magnus.

Associated Minor Houses: House Iommi, House Cronise, House Giles

House Halford: House Halford was once replete with pagans and heretics, but after a major conversion effort by the Illuminated Church they have become the most penitent of all the Houses. The Law of the Church is the law in Halford lands, and any who oppose it will quickly find an Inquisitorial force knocking on the door of their hovel. Halfords are brutal and fanatical, so much so that they see other less devoted Houses as heretics that need to be purged - but that, of course, is really just a matter of time.

Associated Minor Houses: House Wishart, House Barge, House MascisTanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-87587991968440412712020-07-02T11:48:00.000-07:002020-07-02T12:09:14.936-07:00Borderlands: The Noble Houses

The real political & economic power of the Borderlands are the Noble Houses - decadent, depraved lines of noble families who were given charters of rulership back when the Empire was first formed. Over the decades, countless minor houses have spun off due to bastard scions or lands granted to sycophantic knights, but most of these hold allegiance to one of the major Houses.

Each house is extremely wealthy, holding large tracts of lands, indentured servants, guards, entourages and covert agents. While their many laborers break their backs in farms and mines and lumberyards, the landed gentry live in opulent luxury in their grand palatial estates. They travel to each other's holdings in heavily-guarded carriages, whereupon they feast, hold masquerades, drink themselves into a stupor and consume mind-altering drugs.

Nobles live in an entirely different world than most of those in the Borderlands - they wear elaborate, gaudy jewelry and clothes, cover themselves in powders and perfumes, and walk with elaborately bejeweled canes. All this is a front though - the clothes cover scratch marks from drug use, the powders hide syphilitic sores, and the canes hold hidden daggers to use against any rabble who deign to get too close.

At the foundation of the Empire, a dozen Noble Houses composed the electorate. However, after years of backstabbing, intrigue and outright genocide, only five remain: House Ford, House Danzig, House Osbourne, House Halford, and House Kilmeister.Tanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-73574555210852372392020-07-02T08:14:00.002-07:002020-07-02T08:19:21.921-07:00Age of Iron Hiatus and New Project

Hello everyone,

I come to you with hat in hand with unfortunate news. For the foreseeable future, I am going to be putting the Age of Iron setting on developmental hiatus.

I know some of you are fans of it for sure, but my drive and creativity for it is almost non-existent right now. It was hewing too close to the Old World, and not in a way I found entertaining or overly productive, honestly.

I'm not deleting any posts or throwing out what I have, but it is going to go on the backburner for a while.

Not coincidentally, I am going to start doing blog posts for another setting I HAVE been inspired by. It's one inspired by more recent entries in dark fantasy - things like From Software games, Darkest Dungeon, Gloomhaven, Blasphemous, Dungeon Degenerates, or even the new editions of WFRP. A smaller, more concentrated and detailed setting rather than a sprawling continent. It's also inspired by swords & sorcery settings, Ralph Bakshi, that Adult Swim pilot Korgoth of Barbaria, and heavy metal music

The name for this setting is up in the air, but I'm torn between either Todreich or The Borderlands - probably Borderlands just for ease of use. The blog entries will be more like what you'd find in a blog like From the Sorcerer's Skull - quick snippets of a world and what interests me at that time.

Hopefully you'll stick around, because I think it's gonna be really fun, not overly serious, and pretty grimdark.

Basically, it's my take on WH's Old World, but I'm sure you already know that. However, I have a few changes that I hope will make it stand out.

KNOWN LANDS
Aquilla: Aquilla is my 'Empire', but is instead based on the later days of the Byzantine Empire. It's the major power in the region, but it is waning. It also contains the megalopolis of Lygos, which is my Constantinople and is an important place in the setting's lore.

The Barrens: A buffer area between Aquilla and the east, haunted by goblinoids and bandits. Basically the Badlands, but patroled by pseudo-templars

Couronne: Bretonnia without the Lady of the Grail, but still with knights and decadent nobility

Drakenlanda: Scandinavian raiders mixed with a bit of Anglo-Saxon, but not explicitly chaotic like most Norscans. They are generally just untrusted. Think Ferelden from Dragon Age

Hespia: Spain/Estalia, but more at the beginning of their empire rather than post-Reconquista. A little more Arabic influence too

Khazagul Dum: The realms of the dwarves, I'm highly considering this being placed in the Alps rather than in an eastern range of mountains that serves as a border.

Marcher Baronies: This is my Holy Roman Empire, and is a bit more true to the reality of the HRE - a loose collection of kingdoms united under a figurehead emperor. Basically, I switched the Border Princes and the Empire. My not-Netherlands is also here.

Ruthen: My Russia/Poland, pretty similar to Kislev but more explicitly descendants of nomadic Scythian-esque cultures. I might put my Sylvania here, maybe in Aquilla depending

Tir Annwn: Wood elves, but a lot more Celtic/Pictish than WH makes them out to be. Tir Annwn is my version of Athel Loren.

Viteli: Italy, with pretty similar ideas to Tilea as a state of merchants and mercenaries. One of the more cut and dry places, but it DOES include a Sartosa-type area for pirating.

My plan is to do how WFRP 1e did and keep the rest of the world at about a paragraph per area. A quick overview is:

West: High Elves in a psuedo-England, the Caribbean, S America ruled by lizardmen, N. America by the way of colonial America via siabra
South: Otttoman Empire, Undead Egypt, Mali/Ghana, Ethiopia, and Bantu states
East: Darklands-like area, Mongol-esque Ogres, China, India, Japan and SE Asia
North: Chaos Wastes combined with Eastern steppes
Other: Skrzzak empire underground

Hopefully, this organization will help me get a little more focused and reduce the work down a good deal, as well as leaving the rest of the world relatively mysterious

Tanner Yeahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05468516503216249146noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4420957458680067847.post-90996744040284050412020-06-25T06:57:00.001-07:002020-06-25T06:57:08.347-07:00Age of Iron UpdateHello all, hope everything is going as good as it can in our modern age (which is saying a lot, sadly). I'm here with some updates about Age of Iron!

Sadly, the update is I've somewhat hit a wall. I look at the earliest files for the setting (back when it was called the 300 Years War), and I realize I've been working on this thing for nearly two years. Which isn't expressly bad, but the amount of work I've put in isn't nearly close enough to legitimize two years of work.

It has basically fueled a drive in me to get rid of the damn thing - not trash it, but get it to as close as a publishable form as I can get it. Which kind of results in my analyzing the content and seeing what I can drop or alter.

I'm starting to see the merit of a more 'regional' setting instead of trying to cover the whole world. Blue Rose's Aldea, Warhammer's Old World, Kings of War's Mantica, Forgotten Realm's Sword Coast, Dragon Age's Thedas, The Witcher's Continent, Warmachine's Iron Kingdoms and many other settings pack their entire narrative into concentrated regions - leaving the rest of the world implied or vaguely described.

This solves a lot of issues I was running into, such as unfamiliarity/lack of expertise with non-Western nations, trying to compact global religions into a few broad archetypes, and making the scope too 'epic' for a dark fantasy game.
